Humans have always tried to make sense of the random firing of synapses that occurs when we sleep and dream. We are at our most vulnerable when we sleep, unconscious to the world, and surely there must be angels or other guardians watching over us to keep us safe.
I have always believed - and it's as good as any other belief you can conjure with a book or a philosophy or science - it is that which we have learned to love the most, that which has moved us and made us whole, that are the spirits that guard us when we sleep. They are always with us, they are what give us strength and guide us through the dark of the night to the dawn.
